Vocal Disorders

Vocal cord nodule due to high vocal demand

Vocal cords lesion may be due to nodules, polyps or cyst. They are commonly due to vocal overuse and trauma.

Symptoms include hoarseness, vocal strain, throat pain and sometimes a weak and breathy voice. Patients may also experience frequent cough, throat clearing and general fatigue.

Diagnosis is made via a specialized nasoendoscope.

Treatment includes voice therapy, treatment of all triggers, and voice rest. Surgery is reserved for refractory vocal cord nodule not responding to conservative treatment. Vocal polyps and cyst do not respond to voice therapy and are best treated with surgery.
